TERROR
-THE MUSICAL I live on Mersea Road, Colchester, Essex. From my house I can hear the rifle ranges at Middlewick,
with its semi-automatic machine gun fire in the morning, from my kitchen window I watch sinister green troop-carrying
helicopters fly by. I walk to town and see the remnants of dead flowers hanging off the fence outside the old Victorian barracks
called Hyderadbad and Meanee, flowers left as tribute to fallen comrades and loved ones. Home to the 2nd and 3rd Battalion
of the Parachute Regiment, until they moved to modern barracks, a mile down the road, across Abbey Fields, and closer to M.C.T.C.
home to the Army's Military Corrective Training Centre. The last remaining Military prison in the UK. I
share a pint in The Fox and Fiddler alongside off-duty soldiers, before I walk across the road and sing a few songs
in The Bull on a Wednesday night. The Bull that once was THE Squaddie pub in Colchester. What does all this
mean to me? To be living in Colchester. A town that has been a garrison town since 46AD, when Roman emperor Claudius
invaded Britain with the 20th Victorious Valerian Legion. The war in Afghanistan and Iraq surrounds me. The
men and women who fight it, stand next to me in the Co-Op with their eggs and HP sauce, their live rounds punctuate my breakfast
and their dead petaled tributes blow in my front garden. Across the street are two huge billboards. With
colour advertisements, one urging me to rummage through my neighbours rubbish bin looking for chemicals that might be used
to construct a bomb, another telling me to report anyone studying CCTV cameras. Phone the confidential Anti-Terrorist hotline.
I did. I asked them what chemicals I should look for? Nothing specific, was the reply. Nothing specific! Be
careful what you put in your bin. Don't go looking at CCTV cameras, accept them, don't look up, keep your
head down. Anti-Terror. No such thing. Just Terror.
